Naomi (Getsoyan) Topalian, a registered nurse, is a graduate of American University of Beirut, Lebanon and Boston University School of Nursing. She has spent many years in the nursing profession, both in its practice and in teaching, beginning at the American University of Beirut Hospital and then in various hospitals in the Boston area including Childrens Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

She gained much of the direction for her life from her mothers gracious will and spirit and spent years gathering the information of her mothers experiences. She recounts them in this book, much as they were told to her, for their value in reflecting the individual history of certain periods in the life of Armenians and for their inspiration as a story of courage. For Zarouhi, the mother, with her husband, toddler and infant, left Marash in Turkish Armenia during World War I to save their lives, and along with many other Armenians who left Marash then, emigrated to Aleppo and Damascus, Syria and from there to Beirut, Lebanon, all amid great hardships.

In Lebanon they rebuilt their lives and their community. Her entry into America at the age of 78 thus becomes a triumph, but the real triumph is that of her faith and courage with which she has inspired her family at every step to survive and endure and with which she has inspired her children on to achievements. The details of her journey through all her hardships, starting in 1895, is recorded here not only as a family history, but also as a record of what the Armenians in dispersion have gone through.
